In the traditional belief of the Ainu, spirits inhabit all things. Especially those things which affect human life deeply, like animals, plants, natural phenomena like fire and lightning, disasters, and diseases, are called kamuy (gods) and worshipped. In Ainu belief, to be able to live every day without misfortune is entirely related to kamuy, and prayers and thanks were offered to them.
